Trenino Verde (little green train), by train through Sardinia.

The Trenino Verde is a wonderful tourism project of the Italian railroad company Ferrovie della Sardegna. And yes, there is a railroad network in Sardinia. You can actually take the train from Olbia in the north to the island’s capital Cagliari in the south – but that’s another story, which we’ll tell later.

Some branch lines became unprofitable over the years and in the 1990s local passenger services on these lines were discontinued. This resulted in a seasonal excursion service with the “little green train”, which is operated exclusively in the summer season.

The routes cross the most beautiful mountain regions of Sardinia and a ride on this narrow-gauge railroad is a very special adventure. Great fun and with breathtaking views of the Sardinian landscape.
