The journey to Sardinia

By car or plane to Sardinia

Make the journey comfortable

By plane or ferry to Olbia.

By airplane

Olbia Airport is served by many airlines. Depending on the season, for example in winter, not directly, but via a stopover.

You can see – but not hear – Olbia airport in the distance from the terrace of Villa Ella. The airport is approx. 18 km away and can be reached in approx. 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic and time of day. If we are expecting guests, we drive off when we see the plane land at the specified time and are then on site on time. Very practical.

If you have not booked a rental car, which is very practical given our location on a mountain and for exploring the surrounding area, we will be happy to pick you up at the airport.

Rental cars are available at Olbia Airport from various providers and a reservation is recommended. A list of all car rental companies can be found here. We have had good experience with the provider Sixt.

Attention! If you book the rental car from home, remember to bring the credit card used for the booking and the driver’s license of the person who reserved the car.

By ferry

The ferry port of Olbia can also be seen from Villa Ella. The Olbia ferry terminal is approx. 10 km away and can be reached in approx. 15 – 20 minutes.

The following ferry connections are popular:

Genoa – Olbia
Livorno – Olbia
Piombino – Olbia
Civitavecchia – Olbia

The starting points of Genoa and Livorno have proven to be practical, as several ferries cross over to Sardinia every day. The journey from Livorno takes approx. 6-7 hours and the journey from Genoa approx. 10-11 hours.

Tips for the crossing

Book a cabin. The crossing is long and it is more pleasant to spend the night in a cabin than in the deckchairs or on deck. If you choose a reclining chair, take a blanket with you – the air conditioning can be very fresh.
Food and drinks. There are bars and restaurants on board, but both are expensive and the quality of the food is rather poor. It’s better to take sandwiches, tomatoes, fruit, mineral water and a bottle of wine with you.
Breakfast. Breakfast should be booked in advance. It’s not expensive and there’s coffee, croissants, rolls and toppings. Nothing special, but it’s a great way to start the day.
