Welcome to Sardinia

My new home. Sardinia.

Sardinia is very large, colorful, diverse and has a lot to offer. It is not without reason that I bought a house and a vacation home here. The light, the people, the nature and the diversity inspire me every day. I write about my impressions and experiences in my Sardinia vacation blog.

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean

Sardinia (Sardigna in Sardinian, Sardegna in Italian) is the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily. Sardinia belongs to Italy and, together with the small offshore islands, forms the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. Sardinia is about 24,000 km² in size and has 1.6 million inhabitants. In terms of size and population, this corresponds almost exactly to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Šrdn, Nuragen and their history

The Phoenicians called the island “Šrdn”, after an unidentified people, which is probably where the name comes from. The Euboians called the island “Ichnoussa”, hence the name of the most popular beer on the island. In addition to these two seafaring peoples, the island was also visited by the Punic, Roman, Byzantine and Arab peoples. The traces of the beginning of the Nuragic culture, which spanned a period from 2200-400 BC, are lost in the darkness of history. Nuraghi or nuraghi are prehistoric tower buildings of the Bonnanaro culture, which can be found all over Sardinia. However, these buildings are not uniform, but exist in great variety and the purpose of their use is disputed: place of worship, burial site, residential building and fortification. Around 7,000 of these stone buildings have been found on the island so far. These imposing stone buildings are well worth a visit.

The magic of Sardinia

Sardinia’s breathtaking beauty and cultural diversity make the island a sought-after destination in the Mediterranean. From turquoise bays to historic towns and culinary delights, Sardinia offers a wealth of tourist attractions in every season.

The Sardinian coast is a mosaic of fascinating beaches that are certainly among the most beautiful in the world. The Costa Smeralda in the north-east of the island enchants with dazzling white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water. Beaches such as the world-famous Cala Goloritze attract visitors with their picturesque scenery and offer the perfect setting for relaxation – even if you can only reach this beach on foot or by boat.

Sardinian towns and villages

The cultural history of Sardinia is reflected in the charming villages and towns. Olbia is a modern port city with a beautiful old center. The largest city in the northern part of the island offers urban flair and pure Italian lifestyle. Alghero, with its Catalan architecture, is a cultural jewel. The old town, surrounded by city walls, enchants with narrow alleyways, historic churches and a fascinating mix of Sardinian and Catalan culture. Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia in the south, is a lively place that combines history and modernity. The medieval old town, the Castello, impresses with its narrow alleyways and historic buildings. At the same time, the modern Marina district pulsates with trendy bars and restaurants.

Nature and hiking

Sardinia is also a paradise for nature lovers. The Gennargentu National Park is home to the majestic Gennargentu Mountains and offers hiking trails through untouched landscapes. The Grotta di Nettuno, a cave on the cliffs, is fascinating with its stalactites and underground lakes.

Sardinian cuisine

Sardinian cuisine is a culinary journey for the palate. The variety ranges from simple, authentic dishes, often centered around pork, to sophisticated seafood specialties. Sardinian cuisine is based on local ingredients such as pecorino cheese, olive oil and fresh seafood.

Not forgetting the traditional festivals and events that take place on the island throughout the year. The famous carnival festival of Mamoiada, where the mysterious “Mamuthones” perform, or the Cavalcata Sarda in Sassari are just two examples of the island’s vibrant culture.

Sardinia combines scenic diversity, cultural heritage and culinary delights to create a unique travel experience. The island welcomes its visitors with open arms and promises unforgettable discoveries in every corner. Whether sun worshippers, culture vultures or nature lovers – Sardinia has something for everyone and will remain in the hearts of its visitors for a long time.
