Mountain biking in Sardinia

Sardinia: a paradise for mountain bikers

Hilly and demanding in terms of fitness and ability

With its romantic bays, turquoise sea, miles of sandy beaches, rugged mountains and adventurous single trails, Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, offers an incomparable backdrop for mountain bike enthusiasts.

Choosing the right time for mountain bike tours

In early summer, the island still belongs almost exclusively to those who explore the hinterland by mountain bike. The beaches are also comparatively deserted at this time of year. The climate is already pleasantly warm and the sea usually reaches temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius along the east coast – ideal conditions for a cycling and beach vacation, especially for families. Because it can get unbearably hot inland in midsummer. From September into November, conditions are just as perfect as in spring.

The topography of Sardinia is mostly hilly to mountainous. The largest mountain, the Gennargentu, is located in the eastern center of the island and reaches an altitude of 1,834 meters on Punta La Marmora. Other smaller mountain ranges such as the Gallura in the north with its bizarre rock formations, the Supramonte on the east coast and the Iglesiente in the southwest characterize the landscape. Larger flat regions can only be found between Cagliari and Oristano and at the north-western tip of the island.

Don’t forget your repair kit and water

Away from the paved roads and paths, passionate mountain bikers can expect some rough terrain. The forest and gravel paths are often rough and bumpy, while the trails are sometimes technically demanding and bumpy. The highlight of the flow experience is the endlessly long single trail to Cala Sisine, one of the most beautiful routes on the island.

Sufficient water and food are essential on all tours, as the infrastructure in Sardinia is sparse and there are hardly any places to stop for refreshments or huts. Drinkable water is also rare to find. In addition to at least two spare inner tubes, a repair kit and tools were part of the basic equipment.

Villa Ella is an excellent starting point for mountain bike tours in northern Sardinia.
